Spontaneous CP breaking in QCD and the axion potential: an effective Lagrangian approach

Abstract: Using the well-known low-energy effective Lagrangian of QCD -valid for small (non-vanishing) quark masses and a large number of colors -we study in detail the regions of parameter space where CP is spontaneously broken/unbroken for a vacuum angle θ = π. In the CP broken region there are first order phase transitions as one crosses θ = π, while on the (hyper)surface separating the two regions, there are second order phase transitions signalled by the vanishing of the mass of a pseudo Nambu-Goldstone boson and b… Show more

“…Modulo the (squared) Peccei-Quinn scale f 2 a , the axion mass squared is at all temperatures T given by the QCD topological susceptibility [11,43,[70][71][72]74] very accurately [75,76] (up to negligible corrections of the order (pion mass) 2 f 2 a ):…”

“…This vacuum structure has recently been clarified for finite N by the identification of a mixed discrete 't Hooft anomaly for T-symmetry and a 1-form center symmetry [5] (See also [6][7][8]). The presence of this anomaly, along with the assumption of a gapped spectrum, provides a more general argument for the spontaneous breaking of T-symmetry and the presence of degenerate vacua atθ ¼ π.…”

“…It is discussed in Ref. [115] that in the SM at the zero temperature such breaking does not occur due to the small but non-degenerate up and down quark masses. Although at finite temperature a phase transition to the broken phase was argued to be possible, this possibility is currently disfavored by the recent lattice data.…”
