High temperature often induces oxidative stress and antioxidant response in insects. This phenomenon has been well documented under controlled laboratory conditions, but whether it happens under fluctuating field conditions is largely unknown. In this study, we used an invasive lace bug (Corythucha ciliata) as a model species to compare the effects of controlled thermal treatments (2 h at 33-43°C with 2°C intervals in the laboratory) and naturally fluctuating thermal conditions (08:00-14:00 at 2-h intervals (29.7-37.2°C) on a hot summer day in a field in Shanghai, China) on lipid peroxidation (malondialdehyde (MDA) was the marker) and anaerobic respiration (lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) was the marker), as well as superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), glutathione (GSH), and glutathione reductase (GR). The results show that MDA concentration increased significantly in response to heat stresses with similar trend in the laboratory and field. LDH activities did not significantly vary across temperatures in the laboratory-exposed individuals, but they significantly increased by rising temperature in the field. The activities or concentrations of SOD, CAT, GSH, and GR all significantly increased with increasing temperature in the two populations. These findings indicate that high temperature induces oxidative stress, resulting in high anaerobic respiration and antioxidant defenses in C. ciliata under both the laboratory and field conditions, which likely provide a defense mechanism against oxidative damage due to the accumulation of ROS.

IntroductionCoastal zones, considered to be a valuable economic and environmental resource for human and marine habitats, are the most dynamic natural environment of any region on earth. Changes in the ocean-climate system and increasing human activities in these regions make the coastal areas more susceptible to natural hazards and more costly to live in. One of the most serious problems is the accelerated sea level rise and its resulting physical impacts on the coastal zones. Any rise in the mean sea level may result in the retreat of unprotected coastlines due to coastal inundation, erosion, and increased storm flooding (Nicholls et al. 1995). As emphasized in the Fourth Assessment Report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC AR4), the global sea level rose by 1.8 to 3.1 mm/year during the last century and present estimates of future rise range from 18 cm to 59 cm by the year 2100 (Solomon et al. 2007). Low lying areas such as beach ridges, coastal plains, deltas, estuaries, lagoons, and bays would be the areas that would suffer the most as a result of the enhanced sea level rise. Thus, it is essential to quantify the response of coastal systems to sea level change, as well as to assess the potential threats posed to human and marine biodiversity.A near global comparative analysis by Dasgupta et al. (2007) regarding the impact of permanent inundation due to sea level rise on 84 developing countries revealed that hundreds of millions of people in the developing world are likely to be displaced by a sea level rise of 1 to 5 m within this century. Accompanying economic and ecological damage will be severe for many. Approximately 0.3% (194,000 km 2 ) of the territory of the 84 developing countries would be impacted by a 1-m rise. This would increase to 1.2% in areas where the sea level rose 5 m. Nearly 56 million people (approximately 1.28% of the population) in these countries would be impacted under a 1-m rise scenario. This would increase to 89 million people for 2 m and 245 million people (approximately 5.57%) for a 5-m rise. The impact of sea level rise on gross domestic product (GDP) is slightly greater than the impact on population, because GDP per capita is generally above average for coastal populations and cities. Wetlands would experience significant impact even with a 1-m rise. Sci., 49: 27-33.In 2010 and 2011, the efficiency of azadirachtin, applied as systemic trunk injections in the trunks of Platanus sp., was tested against Corythucha ciliata. Azadirachtin in the doses of 0.1 and 0.05 g of active ingredient per cm of diameter at breast height was applied in April. It was found that after application of both doses, the count of C. ciliata in planetree leaves significantly decreased. In 2010 and 2011, the average counted number of C. ciliata individuals in trees treated with the dose 0.1 g a.i./cm of dbh was 12.9 and 4.9, respectively, and 29.1 and 6.5 individuals, respectively, in trees treated with the dose 0.05 g a.i./cm of dbh, in the control it was 152.3 and 105.8 individuals, respectively.
