Sprinting with an amputation

Abstract: Study DesignThe study comprises two elements: 1) A video based analysis of race based limb to limb symmetry 2) A video based analysis of race based step count. Background/ObjectivesT44 sprinting with an amputation is still in a state of relative infancy. Future scope for athletic training and prosthetic limb development may be assisted with a better understanding of information derived from T44 athletes when under race-based conditions. To this end, the behaviour of both step count and step frequency are inves… Show more

“…The races included the 2008 Beijing and 2012 London Paralympics, and the International Paralympic Committee Athletics World Championships in 2011 and 2013. A similar approach to analyze publicly available data from sports competitions for research purposes has previously been used in several studies (Salo et al 2011 ; Hobara et al 2015 ; Dyer et al 2014 ). Institutional review board approval was obtained prior to study initiation.…”

“…Whilst attention has focused on the act of amputee running [2], the behaviour of its technology [6] or characteristics when such athletes race [7], no study to date has investigated the male 100 m lower-limb amputee sprinting results and participation over the course of its history at the Paralympic Games. This study will evaluate both performance data from the Paralympic Games over the 1976-2012 period and then compare this to the able-bodied equivalent.…”
