Squamous Cell Carcinoma Arising in Warthin’s Tumour: A Case Report

Abstract: Warthin's tumour (adenolymphoma) is a well defined salivary gland tumour which consists of epithelial and lymphoid components. However, the malignant transformation of adenolymphoma is extremely rare. We are reporting a case of squamous cell carcinoma which arose in a Warthin's tumour of the right parotid gland, to highlight its varied cytolomorphological features which can cause diagnostic problems on cytological examination. The review of the literature has been discussed. P J Yaranal, UmashanKar T

“…In cases of WT with predominance of the lymphoid component, squamous cells and necrotic/mucoid debris, there can be a significant diagnostic challenge because the squamous element, in particular, is common to squamous cell carcinomas and mucoepidermoid carcinomas [7]. Aspirates dominated by lymphoid components can be indistinguishable from a reactive lymph node or sialadenitis.…”

“…Malignant transformation of Warthin’s tumor is more common in the lymphoid component than the epithelial component, although malignant carcinoma is very rare (0.3%) 8 . Carcinomatous components have been reported as mucoepidermoid carcinoma (MEC) 9 10 11 12 13 , squamous cell carcinoma (the most common) 8 14 , oncocytic carcinoma, adenocarcinoma 15 16 17 18 and undifferentiated carcinoma 19 20 .…”
