Squamous cell carcinoma associated with inverted papilloma: Recurrence and prognostic factors

Abstract: The purpose of the present study was to review the recurrence and prognostic factors of squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) associated with inverted papilloma (IP). A retrospective chart review was conducted on 21 patients with SCC associated with IP, in the nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses, between March 2007 to March 2017. All patients underwent surgical treatment: Surgery prior to or following adjuvant therapy was performed in 17 patients (81.0%). During a mean follow-up time of 47.4 months (range, 3-123 months… Show more

“…There was no statistically significant correlation between EBV infection and disease recurrence. Among reported risk factors for recurrence of SNSCC and SIP are patient behavior, [38][39][40]. Among these, the most important factors seem to be staging, incomplete removal, malignancy, and surgical technique [38,39,41,42].…”

“…[18][19][20] Besides the risk of recurrence, there is also the risk of malignant transformation, which is seen in 5% to 11% of all specimens. 14,[21][22][23][24][25][26] Previous series reported a rate of approximately 2:1 of synchronous to metachronous transformation. 22 Treatment of SNIPs primarily consists of David Holzmann and Christian M. Meerwein contributed equally to this study and worked as joint last authors.…”

“…SSCC occurs from SIP in 2-27% cases. (4) The sinonasal cavity covered with respiratory epithelium suffers squamous metaplasia that continuous to form squamous intraepithelial neoplasia to SSCC. (5) Epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) is a 170 kDa protein and a member of the ErbB family from receptor tyrosine kinase (RTK) which promotes cell survival, proliferation, invasiveness.…”
