Potato is an important crop in India with area spread across Himalayan hills in the North to hot tropical conditions in South, albeit major area in subtropical Indo-Gangetic plains. The first common requirement in all regions is that the variety should have high performance for tuber yield along with essential agronomic traits. The present study was carried out to identify an ideal variety with wide adaptability for tuber yield and dry matter. Six varieties were evaluated in 9, 11 and 10 locations in the years 2014-15, 2015-16 and 2016-17, respectively for TY, MY and DM. The data were analysed with ANOVA, mixed models, BLUPs and GGE biplot as well as univariate stability statistics. Combined analysis of variance showed significant genotype, environment and genotype Â environment interactions. The relative magnitudes of G, E and GÂE variances accounted for 6.76-8.91, 51.85-76.65 and 12.41-23.19 per cent for TY and 2.86-4.66, 65.87-72.85 and 13.74-20.04 per cent for DM. Although the genotypes contributed significantly, major part of the variation was explained by environments for all the three traits. Mean across locations and years, and BLUP values of varieties for all the three traits showed similar results with Kufri Khyati as the best variety for TY and MY, whereas Kufri Jyoti and Kufri Garima were best for DM. Based on GGE biplot and univariate stability statistics, Kufri Khyati was the ideal high yielding wide adaptable variety in all the three years and Kufri Jyoti was the ideal variety based on mean dry matter and stability. The environments were very diverse and their clustering suggested three groups, which can be used as three separate zones for varietal evaluation and regional deployment of varieties.

Agriculture is essential to ensuring food security and prosperity around the world. The importance of cultivating agricultural plant species cannot be overestimated. One of the key challenges faced by modern food producers is to increase efficiency while ensuring sustainability and improving resilience to unfavorable environmental conditions brought about by ongoing climate change. To meet these challenges, it is vital to continue breeding work and to select plant varieties best adapted to local farming conditions. Undoubtedly, future yield increases will only be achievable by way of genetic improvement. In turn, crop-variety recommendations should rely on the results of properly designed post-registration variety testing (PRVT, in polish PDO), followed up by specific variety recommendations for growers. In this article, we attempt to fill a gap in the international literature regarding post-registration variety testing. We present PRVT as a unique scheme that is key to selecting agricultural plant varieties recommended for cultivation, with due account taken of Poland’s specific farming conditions. Every year, over 1000 field cultivar tests are carried out as part of PRVT. The results of these tests constitute reliable, objective source material for farmers and help them make choices regarding the most valuable varieties for cultivation that are also best adapted to local farming conditions. Among the financial benefits of selecting the right crop varieties for agriculture are lower cultivation costs, including reduced fertilizer and pesticide spending, and higher income generated by larger yields.

Tuber dry matter content (TDM) is considered as the main determinant of processed potato tuber quality. In order to investigate rapid, practicable and reliable methods for the measurement of TDM, a study was planned to compare three standard methods (digital potato hydrometer, moisture-drying on quartz seasand and oven-dry) among 189 diverse potato genotypes, grown under three environmental conditions (Hatay "standard water application", Konya "standard water application" and Konya "drought" conditions). ANOVA revealed highly significant differences (p<0.01) in all treatments among tests, checks and tests vs check genotypes. Environmental conditions significantly affect the TDM, while methods showed differential response within the tested environments. A strong correlation (r) and high goodness of fit (R 2 ) was observed between seasand and hydrometer methods as compared to oven-dry method. Wide applicability and reliability of seasand and hydrometer methods were also confirmed by stability statistics. This study recommends seasand as an accurate and hydrometers as rapid method in contrast to oven dry method for the measurement of TDM. Parametric stability methods such as bi and S 2 di identified stable genotypes with optimum TDM, that can serve as a useful resource for breeding of processing cultivars.
