Stability of multi-layer ecosystems

Abstract: Community structure is reported to play a critical role in ecosystem stability, which indicates the ability of a system to return to equilibrium after perturbations. However, current studies rely on the assumption that the community consists of only a single-layer structure. In practice, multi-layer structures are common in ecosystems, e.g. the distributions of both microorganisms in strata and fish in the ocean usually stratify into multi-layer structures. Here we use multi-layer networks to model species int… Show more

“…Complex networks, consisting of nodes representing components within a system and edges indicating their connections or relationships, serve as a highly effective framework for modeling a wide variety of natural and engineered systems [1][2][3][4][5][6]. In the field of network science, a significant amount of effort has been invested in understanding, predicting and controlling the behavior of complex systems modeled as static networks, where links or connection patterns are fixed between nodes.…”

“…Similar to the animal muscle, pulvinus (the 'plant muscle') has triggered lots of bioinspired devices with hydrogels (Xu et al 2021) or fluid pressure as the actuation source, with gas (Vasista and Tong 2012, Li and Wang 2015b, Li and Wang 2015a, Li and Wang 2016 or liquid osmosis (Piyasena et al 2009, Must et al 2019.…”
