“…This model has also been shown to be valid in other fields, such as alcohol misuse [20,21] and exercise [22,23]. However, alternative models involving fewer processes have been found to be the most comprehensive in other fields [24][25][26]. In this regard, Horwath [27] and Povey et al [28] have both questioned whether the processes of change originally defined by the TTM in the context of addictions would also be applicable to the field of weight management.…”

“…Some studies found no significant relationship between stages of change and measures of treatment attendance, duration, or program completion. In other studies, measures of precontemplation (indicating that the participant was not considering change) were predictive of drop-out (Smith, Subich, & Kalodner, 1995), but sometimes in the "wrong" direction (i.e., longer retention in treatment; Belding, Iguchi, Lamb, Lakin, & Terry, 1995;Jefferson, 1991). Similarly, baseline stage has been predictive of outcomes in some studies and not others, and there are mixed results within some studies.…”

“…The measures used in the present study are shortened versions of the originals and specific for illegal drug use, and have been used successfully in previous studies assessing problem drug use (Belding, Iguchi, Lamb, & Lakin, 1995;Tsoh, 1995). The measures are all designed to be read on an 6 th -grade reading level, and therefore suitable for use with a mentally ill population.…”

“…Each item refers to a "problem" that the patient identifies. Research has supported the use of a brief version (24-items) of the URICA with an alcoholism treatment population, and comparable versions that have also been used successfully with various drug-abusing populations (Tsoh, 1995;Belding et al, 1995). The URICA-M is a modified version of the URICA that consists of 24 items and is designed to suit the needs of people with SMI, including: (1) reading each item aloud to accommodate participants who cannot read or do not have eyeglasses; (2) modifying the language to make it simpler and easier to understand for participants with cognitive deficits; (3) defining the "problem" referred to in each item as "illegal drug use"; and (4) including only 24 items.…”
