Stages of Diversification

Abstract: International audienceThis paper studies the evolution of sectoral labor concentration in relation to the level of per capita income. We show that various measures of sectoral concentration follow a U-shaped pattern across a wide variety of data sources: countries first diversify, in the sense that labor is spread more equally across sectors, but there exists, relatively late in the development process, a point at which they start to specialize again. We introduce a model with endogenous costs of trading inter… Show more

“…Industrialisation may once have been thought of as developing a manufacturing sector, as that is the process that 'naturally' evolved (Imbs, and Wacziarg, R., 2003), but today it is wider in scope and includes the development of service sector activities such as financial services, tourism and transport. Tourism is also a resource-based service that requires high logistical and technical support systems (Gelb, 2010).…”

“…According to the coefficients of intensive margin, the inflection point of the inverted U-shaped relationship is 0.79, which is larger than the value of the baseline regression result; correspondingly, the inflection point of the U-shaped relationship is 0.45, which is also larger than the value drawn above. The comparison suggests that, for high-tech sectors, innovation can improve the extensive margin of exports for a wider interval; meanwhile the threshold for intensive margin is higher, indicating that innovation plays a more important role in technological sectors that require greater product diversification and sophistication [36,53,54]. …”

“…Countries going through structural changes first diversify their economies (i.e. building up more complex industrial sectors) and then undertake specializing further once they have reached a certain level of affluence (Imbs and Wacziarg 2003).…”
