This paper opens a pathway for a constructive vision of atmospheric qualities of transit space design. It focuses on an ordinary tunnel for pedestrians and cyclists in a suburban district of Aalborg, Denmark. By way of functionalist design and traffic segregation the tunnel facilitates the passage of daily life journeys. Through unpacking concrete mobile situations that occur on a journey home from school and through speculative architectural explorations into a possible re-design of the tunnel, an underused potential is identified for transit space to be a sensorial and social public space. One way of approaching this potential, it is argued, is to work with transit spaces as atmospheric spaces of wayfaring, drawing to the forefront of design considerations the affective engagement between travellers and the material environment. Inherent in this proposition is a critique of the assumptions that daily life travelling can be reduced to a desensitized and passive transport practice and that transit spaces are placeless.

This article considers dense social interactions in commuter trains and their crucial role within city-wide networks. Literature on social interactions in public transport has focused on how commuters have short interactions with each other, or constitute groups of train friends, but without situating them in wider geographies. The article focuses on deaf people in the Mumbai metropolis who travel in compartments reserved for disabled people, chatting and exchanging news and information. These spatial practices are facilitated by the peninsular geography and train infrastructure of Mumbai. In order to produce deaf spaces, where deaf sociality and sign language use are the organizing principles, deaf people strategically board particular trains and particular compartments, and sometimes remain in the train beyond their original destination. Mobile phones are used to coordinate these meetings. The diversity of people meeting in the train is high, such as with regard to gender, age, religion, caste, class and divisions are either perpetuated or abated. Because these compartments provide a diverse range of deaf people a space for daily meetings on the way to and from their (mostly hearing) work places and families; they are very important spaces to maintain and expand networks in the wider Mumbai deaf community.

In discussing a major public video installation, Elsewhere/Annorstädes/Ailleurs by Tania Ruiz Gutierrez, the present article seeks to address what is referred to here as 'mobility ex situ'-the unsettling aspects of a mobility culture that is both ubiquitous and at the same time exorbitant, never simply 'in place'. Commissioned for one of the stations along the Øresund Link between Denmark and Sweden, this world-embracing cinematic montage is an integrated part of an expansive connectivity infrastructure. Yet, while providing site-specific motion captures of a translocational world, the work not only actualises a radically transformed sense of presence. Randomised and disjointed, the flow of imagery also draws attention to the territorial incoherencies and asymmetries of a mobility culture, which, despite increased site sensitivity, does not manage to shake off its constitutive 'elsewheres'. The artwork thus provides an opportunity to unfold the 'mobility script' from an aesthetic-but also politicalpoint of view, and this in three consecutive steps: the first, an introductory presentation of the art work as situational stammering; the second, a critical reflection through the work on nomadic or dispersed geographies; and the third, a discussion of the work as an expression of a cosmopolitical aesthetics.
