Standardization for obtaining blood viscosity: A systematic review

Abstract: Introduction There is evidence to suggest that blood viscosity (BV) is involved in several pathological processes. In this review, we evaluated the different methods of BV acquisition, analyzing the sample storage time, the storage temperature, the acquisition time, the acquisition temperature, sample volume, and shear rates, in order to standardize this technique. Methods We selected 50 articles with methods of obtaining BV, evaluating pathologies through BV, comparing rheological equipment, monitoring, and r… Show more

“…In this regard, the change law of BV can provide useful data for the diagnosis, treatment, and prognosis of some arterial vascular diseases. 19 To the authors’ knowledge, few researches have paid attention to the correlation between the specific change rule and/or amplitude of BV-related parameters and DVT. We herein prompted that the rapid increase of BRV may actually affect DVT in such patients and the occurrence of low BRV before surgery can potentially be considered as an implication of thrombophilia.…”

“…For the confirmation of blood viscosity, the cone plate rotation and scanning capillary methods were considered representative. The cone plate rotation method is a technique that measures the blood resistance when a certain amount of blood is put between the cone and the plate and rotated, and converts it into blood viscosity [27]. In the case of the scanning capillary method, the blood is passed through an Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) tube and the viscosity of the blood is measured.…”

“…Blood viscosity has been studied in many research centers and among many different groups of patients. The main disorders related to the hemorheological properties are coronary insufficiency, vascular congestion, myocardial infarction, a cerebral circulation disorder, Reynaud disease, ischemic limbs, diabetes, anemia, and tumors [5,7,8,15,16,21].…”
