Standardization of Nasometry for Normal Egyptian Arabic Speakers

Abstract: Objective: The aim of this study was to collect the normative values of nasalance for Egyptian Arabic speakers in different age groups, using Arabic speech samples in order to compare patients with disturbed nasality. Material and Methods: This study included 300 normal Egyptian volunteers divided into three groups according to their ages: group I = children (n = 92; age 3 years, 3 months to 9 years), group II = teenagers (n = 76; age 9–18 years) and group III = adults (n = 132; age above 18 years). The Nasome… Show more

“…A study conducted with children from the states of Sao Paulo and Minas Gerais, aged six to ten years, showed no difference between the participants' naturalness in both the oral and nasal texts (13) . Some authors have reported that nasalance scores increase with age (7,9,(19)(20)(21)27) as a result of changes in the size and shape of the vocal tract resonance cavities caused by growth (7,20,21,28) . Therefore, this fact justifies the absence of difference between nasalance scores in the populations of the states of Sao Paulo and Minas Gerais at early age.…”

“…However, verification of the data revealed a trend of higher nasalance scores in women from Minas Gerais state compared with those of men in the same group for the nasal-2 text, as observed in some studies with adult populations (14,17,25,29) . This tendency is justified by differences in the velopharyngeal sphincter mechanism and in the vocal tract length between the genders (9,14,17,21,24,28) . Perhaps if the sample size of this study were larger, this difference would be more evident.…”

“…Due to certain technical limitations, the Tonar was replaced in 1987 by the so-called Nasometer system, first produced by Kay Elemetrics Corporation and more recently by Kay Pentax. The use of nasometry in different countries soon has shown that nasalance varies according to the language spoken (9)(10)(11)(12)(13) . Studies with Brazilian Portuguese speakers, including children, have shown that nasalance can also vary according to age, gender or the type of emission (syllables and/or sentences) (14,15) , confirming observations for other languages (13,(16)(17)(18)(19)(20)(21)(22) .…”
