Purpose The purpose of this study intends to make a characterization of a shop floor management (SFM) system in the context of smart manufacturing, through smart technologies and digital shop floor (DSF) features. Design/methodology/approach To attain the paper objective, a mixed method methodology was used. In the first stage, a theoretical background was carried out, to provide a comprehensive understanding on SFM system in a smart manufacturing perspective. Next, a case study within a survey was developed. The case study was introduced to characterize a SFM system, while the survey was made to understand the level of influence of smart manufacturing technologies and of DSF features on SFM. In total, 17 experts responded to the survey. Findings Data analytics is the smart manufacturing technology that influences more the SFM system and its components and the cyber security technology does not influence it at all. The problem solving (PS) is the SFM component more influenced by the smart manufacturing technologies. Also, the use of real-time digital visualization tools is considered the most influential DSF feature for the SFM components and the data security protocols is the least influential one. The four SFM components more influenced by the DSF features are key performance indicator tracking, PS, work standardization and continuous improvement. Research limitations/implications The study was applied in one multinational company from the automotive sector. Originality/value To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this work is one of the first to try to characterize the SFM system on smart manufacturing considering smart technologies and DSF features.

PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to support total productive maintenance implementers by providing a roadmap for autonomous maintenance (AM) preparation phase.Design/methodology/approachThe authors use the axiomatic design (AD) methodology with lean philosophy as a paradigm.FindingsThis is an exploratory research to find the most important factors in AM preparation phase. A decoupled AD design ensures an effective usage of training within industry (TWI) and the introduction of standardized work (SW). TWI provides value in importance it assigns to leaders, with its “train the trainers” approach and in preparing a training program. Besides being an effective training method, TWI job instruction (TWI JI) provides needed information infrastructure to front load operators SW and equipment trainings.Research limitations/implicationsAlthough AD, TWI and lean artifacts are generally field proven, the research is limited due to the lack of an industrial application.Practical implicationsIn many real-life projects, companies do not know where to start and how to proceed, which leads to costly iterations. The proposed roadmap minimizes iterations and increases the chance of project success.Originality/valueThe authors apply AD for the first time to AM preparation phase despite it is used in the analysis of lean manufacturing. AD permits to structure holistically the most relevant lean manufacturing solutions to obtain a risk free roadmap. TWI has emerged as a training infrastructure; TWI JI-based operator SW training and the adaptation of JI structure to equipment training are original additions.

For many years, Poka-Yoke (PY) has been used as one of the means to overcome challenges that can affect errors and defects in process. It is a widely accepted concept-a way of thinking, which undoubtedly contributed to significant results in a struggle against the occurrence of errors in various work processes. However, although PY seems to be well understood in theory, there are a large number of scientific papers and books that still seek to clarify and redefine PY, in order to finally implement its application at full capacity. Many authors, as it seems, want to emphasize inconsistencies in current theoretical and practical experiences. This claim is supported by the fact that over 50 similar and different PY definitions have been found in literature. It seems that most researchers do not sufficiently perceive generally accepted attitudes in the field of PY, as well as differences and inconsistencies in some of them. Due to a sense of confusion during the process design stage, an effort to predict locations of possible sources of error is a direct consequence of the diffuse knowledge in the field, which imposes the need to change that state. This paper summarizes the latest studies and definitions in the field of PY applications, in order to propose a comprehensive and generally acceptable definition of PY. In order to find what is common to the most important attitudes in the field of PY, a systematic literature review has been undertaken, with the goal to identify the areas of disagreement, to recognize any gaps that exist and outline personal experiences and attitudes in the field. The novel approach to the types of PY presented in this paper should provide a solid foundation for the creation and development of PY model and a systematic approach to the application of PY in production and service systems. Finally, some conclusions and prospective future research directions are presented. Highlights • Detailed systematic literature review on Poka-Yoke (PY) is presented. • More than 50 examples and case studies on PY are reviewed. • A novel approach to types of PY is proposed. • Examples of PY devices are created and discussed.
