Starting point for benchmarking outcomes and reporting of pituitary adenoma surgery within the European Reference Network on Rare Endocrine Conditions (Endo-ERN): results from a meta-analysis and survey study

Abstract: Objective: The European Reference Network on Rare Endocrine Conditions (Endo-ERN) aims to organize high-quality healthcare throughout Europe, including care for pituitary adenoma patients. As surgery is the mainstay of treatment, we aimed to describe the current surgical practice and published surgical outcomes of pituitary adenoma within Endo-ERN. Design and Methods: Systematic review and meta-analysis of studies reporting surgical outcomes of pituitary adenoma patients within Endo-ERN MTG6 Pituitary Referen… Show more

“…We recommend the standardization of pathological, radiological, surgical and clinical reports to define the criteria that allow for the distinction of aggressive PitNETs from the more common indolent lesions. In this context, pituitary reference centres European Reference Network on Rare Endocrine Conditions, or Pituitary Tumour Centres of Excellence where trained pituitary physicians engage in a multidisciplinary approach is the most appropriate setting to standardization and establish a reproducible risk stratification (Casanueva et al 2017, Pereira & Hiort 2021, Couselo et al 2022, Iotova et al 2022, Shishkov et al 2022, Zamanipoor Najafabadi et al 2023.…”

“…The mission and main clinical goals of the Pituitary MDT/PTCOE are summarised in Table 1 . Ultimately, the key goal is to eliminate, or at least reduce, the excess morbidity and mortality due to pituitary tumours, pituitary hypersecretion syndromes, and other disorders affecting the pituitary, as well as manage the anterior or posterior pituitary hormone deficiencies [ 8 , 10 , 11 , 24 , 25 , 26 , 27 , 28 , 29 , 30 , 31 ]. For most patients, this requires the establishment of a complex program of care and the need for long-term follow-up [ 10 , 11 ].…”

“…Pituitary MDT/PTCOE have only been implemented in recent years; thus, formal definitions are still controversial. However, defining the scope and structure of Pituitary MDT/PTCOE has been addressed by relevant societies in the field, including the Pituitary Society [ 10 , 11 ], and the European Reference Network on Rare Endocrine Conditions (Endo-ERN) [ 26 , 27 ].…”

“…The surgical method of pituitary adenomas was gradually changed to trans-nasal microscopes application. Compared with the traditional craniotomy, transsphenoidal pituitary adenoma resection has the advantages of clear field of vision, flexible operating angle, less trauma, rapid postoperative recovery, high degree of total resection and low probability of recurrence (Ottenhausen et al, 2023;Zamanipoor Najafabadi et al, 2023).…”
