State Anxiety Dependent on Perspiration during Mental Stress and Deep Inspiration

Abstract: Abstract:In this study, we focused on two types of perspiration, one triggered by anticipatory anxiety and the other by voluntary deep inspiration. We have previously found that the anticipation of anxiety causes increases of respiratory frequency, and that these increases are related to an activation of the temporal pole and amygdala in humans. Our interest is in the difference between the two natures of perspiration, both of which are closely related to respiratory responses. The level of sweating responses … Show more

“…Related evidence indicates that heightened anticipatory anxiety is associated with deleterious psychophysiological stress responses 3, 4. Serotonin may well be an important neurotransmitter in this, and other, affective processes 5, as well as playing a role in modulating both psychological 69 and physiological 10–12 aspects of anticipatory anxiety.…”

“…Altered anticipatory processing is a key feature of many of the anxiety disorders, reflected by greater activation in the insula 19, 23, 24, 57, medial frontal gyrus 23, 24, 57–59, and amygdala 4, 24, 57. Although anticipation may be less pertinent to depression than to anxiety, the high comorbidity of anxiety and depressive symptoms60 suggests that elevating anticipatory symptoms may be relevant to both conditions.…”

“…Deste modo, os autores concluíram que as técnicas utilizadas promoveram a manutenção de baixo nível de ansiedade-estado no grupo experimental por maior tempo na parturição 21 . A ansiedade provoca o aumento da frequência respiratória, que está relacionado a uma ativação do polo temporal e da amígdala em seres humanos 22 . Jerath et al 23 em um estudo de 2005 propoem que a ansiedade pode ser modulada pela respiração.…”

“…It is important to maintain the patient's respiration and hemodynamics in the resting state when extracting wisdom teeth. Stress caused by anxiety or predictions regarding blood pressure and respiratory rate results in a rise in catecholamine secretion and sympathetic nervous system dominance5,6. Minimizing anxiety and pain is important during dental treatment in moyamoya patient.…”
