Statistical analysis of the circular economy for the intervention policies of the NRRP

Abstract: PurposeThis paper deals with analyzing the relationships between the domains of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the Missions envisaged by the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (NRRP). Specifically, the authors refer to Mission 2 (Green revolution and ecological transition) and to the statistical indicators related to the M2C1 component (Circular economy and sustainable agriculture).Design/methodology/approachThe numerous data available were analyzed at a regional level using multivariate stati… Show more

“…Considering the importance of the Next Generation EU, also known as Recovery Fund or Recovery Plan, Passaro et al (2024) analyze the relationship between the domains of the SDGs and the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (NRRP) in Italy, focusing on the Mission 2 on "Green revolution and ecological transition" and on the statistical indicators related to the M2C1 component on "Circular economy and sustainable agriculture". Through the use of multivariate statistical methodologies, the authors define the NRRP as an essential opportunity for boosting circular economy solutions and sustainable waste management, as well as to strengthening the infrastructures for separate collection and waste treatment in Italy.…”

“…It results that the main shortcoming is related to the transportation of organic waste to the anaerobic digestion plant, since transportation must take place with a certain frequency, with organic waste being subject to rapid degradation. However, keeping transportation out of boundaries, it should be highlighted that the anaerobic digestion treatment presents the best environmental performance among different valorization pathways of organic waste [59]. Indeed, the anaerobic digestion and composting plant includes an upgrading system for the production of biomethane and the pressure swing adsorption (PSA) system to separate CH 4 from CO 2 , which opens paths for carbon neutrality due to the production of biomethane without carbon dioxide emissions.…”

“…Considering the theoretical benefits coming from spent hens' valorization, both in the field of material and energy recovery, advanced and specific research is required, with particular attention to waste-to-bioproducts and waste-to-energy technologies. Also, these studies are required to achieve the key objectives of the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (NRRP), which asks for a green, ecological and inclusive transition by promoting the circular economy, the development of renewable energy sources and a more sustainable agriculture [69], and organic waste valorization, and the proposals of the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) [70].…”
