Statistical and network-based analysis of Italian COVID-19 data: communities detection and temporal evolution

Abstract: Supplementary file). Then, we mapped those similarity matrices into networks where nodes represent Italian regions and edges represent similarity relationships (edge length is inversely proportional to similarity). Then, network-based analysis was performed mainly discovering communities of regions that show similar behaviour. Then, network-based analysis was performed by running several community detection algorithms on those networks and by underlying communities of regions that show similar behaviour. The n… Show more

“…Although SARS-CoV-2 is similar to other known coronaviruses, i.e. SARS-CoV and MERS-CoV ( Perlman and Netland, 2009 ; de Groot et al, 2013 ; Weber et al, 2021 ), it has demonstrated high rates of infection ( Liu et al, 2020 ; Surveillances, 2020 ; Milano and Cannataro, 2020 ). Hence, there is a need to understand the disease pathogenesis of SARS-CoV-2 to develop effective therapies and vaccines.…”

“…This means that the Italian regions behaved differently with respect to ten different data provided by civil protection. Further analysis about communities in Italian COVID-19 data and their temporal evolution can be found in [ 9 ], where a sequential version of this methodology has been used.…”

“…Moreover, in a survey conducted by the European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons (ESCRS), almost 80% of the Greek participants reported performing no surgeries at all during the lockdown period, compared with approximately 50% of those in Italy, while Italy was one of the most affected European countries bearing one of the highest death rates from COVID-19. 3,4 Cataract surgery, as one of the most common elective operations performed worldwide, was postponed during COVID-19 pandemic in most European and American countries in an attempt to reduce the risk of spreading the infection. 3,4 Another approach though, regarding the management of cataract surgeries, comes from Hong Kong where the continuation of elective cataract surgeries during the COVID-19 pandemic was proposed.…”
