Statistical research on the digestibility in the cow. I. Dry matter and energy

Abstract: The results obtained for dry matter and energy digestibility with 116 different rations fed to 242 non-pregnant dry cows and 96 laotating cows were studied. With winter rations, dry-matter digestibility (Y) is linearly related to dry-matter intake (X x ) and to the crude fibre content of the dry matter (X 2 ):A similar equation was obtained for energy digestibility (Y):where X 1 represents the energy intake (in 1000 kcal) and X 2 the crude-fibre content.Digestible dry matter or energy can be estimated very accu… Show more

“…Tyrrell & Moe (1975) listed nine trials in which falls in proportional digestibility averaged 004/unit increase in intake equal to I MM. Falls of this order were also recorded by Moe (1965), Wagner (1965), Tyrrell (1966), Leaver, Campling & Holmes (1969), Ekern (1972), Paquay, de Baere & Lousse (1972), Trimberger et al (1972), Trigg, Bryant & Cox (1980, Lindgren (1981), Colucci, Chase & Van Soest (1982), Uden (19846). Moe, Flatt & Tyrrell (1972) reported that from 540 metabolism trials the mean fall in proportional digestibility of D.M.…”

“…Individual animal differences may have contributed inordinately to the large differences in DMD between cattle receiving different rations since only one Hereford was tested with each ration. However, individual animal differences in DM digestibility rarely exceed 5% (Paquay et al 1972) while we observed a difference between cattle in overall DMD of 44% (Table 4). Since the hay and grain were fed ad libitum, bison receiving the ration supplement may have consumed relatively less grain than the Hereford receiving the ration.…”
