Abstract. This paper studies seismo-electromagnetic anomalies observed by the French satellite DEMETER (Detection of Electro-Magnetic Emissions Transmitted from Earthquake Regions) during the 27 February 2010 M = 8.8 Chile earthquake. The nighttime electron density (N e ), electron temperature (T e ), ion density (N i ), ion temperature (T i ) and whistler counts (C w ) are investigated. A statistical analysis of the box-and-whisker method is applied to see if data of two or more groups under study are significantly different. A cross-examination of temporal variations before and after shows that N e and N i (C w ) increases (decreases) appear 10-20 days before the earthquake. A comparison of data over the epicenter and those over its reference area can be employed to discriminate the earthquake-related anomalies from global effects. Results prove that anomalous enhancements of N e , N i , and T i occur specifically around the epicenter area. The intersection of the temporal and spatial results confirms that N e and N i are useful and sensitive detecting anomalous related to the 2010 M = 8.8 Chile earthquake.

Abstract. In this paper we focus on the variability of electron concentration in the ionosphere measured by ground based ionosondes and GPS receivers around the time of strong earthquakes. It has been detected and statistically proven that several days before the seismic shock the level of this variability increases at the station closest to the epicenter, a fact which can be regarded as precursory phenomenon. More precisely the localness of this specific kind of ionospheric variability is used for the correlation analysis of data of several observation points. The similarity of geographical location of the observation points leads to the similarity of ionospheric variations registered at these sites during both quiet and disturbed geomagnetic conditions, except in the case of those located at the seismoactive zone. As a rule, the local anomalies in the F2 layer and TEC accompanying the preparation of strong earthquakes show themselves in the breaking of the mutual correlation of the critical frequencies f o F 2 or TEC between stations situated in and outside the seismic zone. The precursory phenomenon appears 1 to 7 days before the time of the seismic shock.

Chen et al [2004] found a very positive correlation between 170 quakes of Richter magnitude ≥5.0 and 307 suspected precursors in Taiwanese ionospheric data for 1994-1999, within an arbitrary five-day lead time. This analysis, however, has the complication that both quakes and precursors tend to be clustered and that many of the assumed lead periods overlap.…”
