Steady-state B-type natriuretic peptide levels in patients with atrial fibrillation of various clinical backgrounds

Abstract: B-type natriuretic peptide level is increased in patients with atrial fibrillation. The aim of the present study was to present the distribution of steady-state B-type natriuretic peptide levels of various clinical backgrounds and to elucidate the usefulness of measuring them in patients with atrial fibrillation. B-type natriuretic peptide was measured in stable conditions in patients with atrial fibrillation (74 ± 10 y/o, n = 473). The average B-type natriuretic peptide level was 161 ± 202 (median 101) pg/ml.… Show more

“…Nonetheless, the prognostic significance of GDF15 in HFpEF was robust even after multivariable adjustment. HFpEF is a syndrome increasingly recognized as an inflammatory condition, and associated with multiple comorbidities, many of which can interfere with the performance characteristics of NT‐proBNP (age, sex, obesity, renal dysfunction and AF) . Our subgroup analysis revealed fairly uniform performance of GDF15 as a prognostic marker in the presence of various comorbidities.…”

“…We have previously reported that BNP was elevated in a substantial percentage of asymptomatic AF patients, especially chronic AF patients [6]. These AF patients could have latent heart failure and a hypercoagulable state.…”

“…Several previous studies demonstrated the elevated blood levels of BNP in patients with AF to compare with subjects with normal sinus rhythm (11,12). Plasma BNP levels in patients with AF were significantly correlated with age, left atrial diameter, left ventricular ejection fraction, diastolic functional parameters including left ventricular hypertrophy, and complication of structural heart disease or heart failure [19,20]. Some of these factors are important components of clinical risk stratification scoring systems for thrombo-embolic events in this disorder [5,6].…”
