Steady-state tokamak operation, ITB transition and sustainment and ECCD experiments in TRIAM-1M

Abstract: Experiments aiming at 'day long operation at high performance' have been carried out in TRIAM-1M. The record value of the discharge duration was updated to 5 h and 16 min. Steady-state tokamak operation is studied under the localized plasma wall interaction conditions. The distributions of the heat load, the particle recycling flux and impurity source are investigated to understand the co-deposition and wall pumping. The formation and sustainment of an internal transport barrier (ITB) in enhanced current drive… Show more

“…From the evaluated I A , we calculated the radially resolved emissivity ε(R) using Abel inversion assuming the toroidal symmetry of the emission. In a tokamak discharge with similar plasma parameters and wall conditions, the variation in H α (p = 2-3) intensity in the toroidal direction was reported to be small except for an approximately 10 times local increase at the poloidal limiter [11]. Since the present discharge is limited by the center stack, the validity of the assumption of the toroidal symmetry could degrade near the center stack.…”

“…The plasma interacting area is monitored with a CCD camera. Other PFCs as well as the vacuum vessel wall in TRIAM-1M are independently diagnosed [19], as described later in this paper.…”

“…TRIAM-1M is a high-field superconducting tokamak (R 0 = 0.8 m, a × b = 0.12 m × 0.18 m) intended for steady state operation (SSTO) [19]. All the PFCs are made of molybdenum and the vacuum vessel is made of stainless steel (SUS 304).…”
