Stem Cell Therapy for Osteoporosis

Abstract: Osteoporosis is a debilitating disease that affects millions of people worldwide. Current osteoporosis treatments are predominantly bone-resorbing drugs that are associated with several side effects. The use of stem cells for tissue regeneration has raised great hope in various fields of medicine, including musculoskeletal disorders. Stem cell therapy for osteoporosis could potentially reduce the susceptibility of fractures and augment lost mineral density by either increasing the numbers or restoring the func… Show more

“…Meanwhile, this is always accompanied by the generation of additional marrow adipose tissue [5-7]. Recently, adipose-derived stem cells (ASCs) have been studied extensively as an alternative cell source to BMSCs due to their widespread sources, easy access and multipotency [3, 8]. More importantly, ASCs isolated from aged or osteoporotic humans and animals maintain their osteogenic differentiation capability, making them more promising for autologous cell-based therapy for osteoporosis [9-11].…”

“…They also hold promise for the treatment of disorders caused by imbalanced stem cell differentiation such as cancer and osteoporosis [2, 3]. Stem cell signaling programs are complex and vary across tissues and developmental processes.…”

“…The use of adipose-derived stromal cells (ASCs) for the purpose of enhancing orthopedic tissue repair and regeneration is now widespread in areas of both experimental and clinical research [14,15]. ASCs have several advantages over other multipotent stem cell sources in that they are easily accessed non-invasively and have been shown to maintain both their proliferative [16e18] and osteogenic [17e19] potential with age.…”
