Stem cells for the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases

Abstract: Stem cells offer an enormous pool of resources for the understanding of the human body. One proposed use of stem cells has been as an autologous therapy. The use of stem cells for neurodegenerative diseases has become of interest. Clinical applications of stem cells for Alzheimer disease, Parkinson disease, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, and multiple sclerosis will increase in the coming years, and although great care will need to be taken when moving forward with prospective treatments, the application of ste… Show more

“…Furthermore, using ESCs in therapeutic procedures may result to tumorigenesis (Dressel et al 2008;BenDavid and Benvenisty 2011). Accordingly, many laboratories have focused on derivation and therapeutic use of other sources of SCs, such as ASCs, which can be used in autologous therapies (Dantuma et al 2010). Nevertheless, ASCs have a lower differentiation capacity, which limits their efficacy for clinical applications (Poulsom et al 2002;Patel and Genovese 2011).…”

“…Multipotent cells, found in many tissues and organs within the human body, are more limited in their renewal and differentiation and can mainly differentiate into cells of the tissue in which they are found [2]. Naturally occurring stem cells includes embryonic stem cells (ESCs), fetal stem cells (FSCs) and adults stem cells (ASCs).…”

“…The latter cells are termed as induced pluripotent stem (iPS) cells. Specific transcription factors such as Oct4, Sox4, Klf4 and c-Myc are used to induce pluripotency [2]. This discovery revolutionized the field of regenerative medicine.…”
