Steps to achieving high-resolution NMR spectroscopy on solutions at GPa pressure

Abstract: Recent theoretical advances and molecular-dynamic estimates of the dielectric constant of water have extended the HKF model for aqueous solution chemistry up to 6.0 gigapascals (GPa), which are conditions well beyond the capabilities of conventional NMR spectroscopy (Pan and others, 2013; Sverjensky and others, 2014, see also Wasserman and others, 1995). These developments provide strong motivation to design a simple NMR probe that allows experiments on solutions, at high resolution, to pressures of a few GPa … Show more

“…Silicate oligomers. A solution containing various oligomers of Si (IV) was prepared using 29 Si-labeled SiO 2 , and spectra of this solution were initially collected in a high-resolution NMR spectrometer before compressing the sample. The solution contained the silicic acid monomer (Q 0 ), dimer (Q 1 2 ), cyclic trimer (Q 2 3 ), cyclic tetramer (Q 2 4 ), and prismatic hexamer (Q 3 6 ), consistent with assignments in the literature.…”

“…Catechol complex. A third solution consisting of dissolved 29 Si labeled SiO 2 was formulated with catechol (1,2-dihydroxybenzene) to create the tris-catecholate complex. An excess of Si NMR spectra of the same solution using the high-pressure NMR probe, measured up to 1.2 GPa (the solution froze immediately above this pressure).…”
