Stepwise propagation of a guided streamer along a DBD helium plasma jet fed by biased oscillating voltage

Abstract: A stepwise propagation of a guided streamer along a helium atmospheric pressure plasma jet driven by a dielectric barrier discharge was recorded. To feed the plasma jet, we used a power supply generating an output voltage signal consisting of a superposition of 41.6 kHz bipolar square pulses and 300 kHz oscillating signals. At a positive half a period of the output voltage signal, a step-by-step propagation was observed for the ionization wave along the plasma jet. The streamer head stops with the decrease in … Show more

“…Many applications of APPJs rely on the plasma production of active species [17,18] which is dependent on several parameters including the electric field strength [19][20][21]. While the knowledge of APPJs has advanced considerably [1], the characteristics of APPJs, such as optical emission, electron density, electron temperature and electric field strength, are still actively investigated [22][23][24][25][26].…”

“…The dynamics of the IWs propagation is complex and depends on the hydrodynamics of the gas mixture, the geometry and the electrical excitation characteristics. Recent advances have shown remarkable controlling capabilities of the step-wise IW development by tailoring the applied voltage waveform enhancing the creation of a second ionization step [13][14][15] . Following this intriguing approach, this work presents a variant configuration of APPJ, taking advantage of the intense EF to produce an electrodeless plasma source.…”

“…23 For a helium APPJ, a stepwise propagation of a guided streamer was observed in our recent works. 24,25 This phenomenon was realized with a power supply that generated an output voltage signal that consisted of a superposition of microsecond bipolar square pulses and oscillating signals. The numerical calculations 26 showed the possibility of a stepwise scenario for streamer propagation with the corresponding modulation of the nanosecond-pulsed applied voltage.…”

“…The value of the gas flow was selected such that the flow was laminar and the length of the plasma jet was maximal. 24,25,28 The jet was sustained in ambient air at an air temperature of 20 C and a relative humidity of 48%.…”
