Stereodivergent synthesis with a programmable molecular machine

Abstract: It has been convincingly argued that molecular machines that manipulate individual atoms, or highly reactive clusters of atoms, with Ångström precision are unlikely to be realized. However, biological molecular machines routinely position rather less reactive substrates in order to direct chemical reaction sequences, from sequence-specific synthesis by the ribosome to polyketide synthases, where tethered molecules are passed from active site to active site in multi-enzyme complexes. Artificial molecular machin… Show more

“…For example, the feature of linearizability [16], of practical importance in assembly lines, could be incorporated into our method because it is related to the distribution of internal nodes and leaves in our hierarchical PFD graphs. And, with a little bit of imagination, our method could potentially find its utility as a module in the recently discovered molecular assembly processes [7], because these processes are characterized by constrained geometric arrangements, local interactions and reduced reactivity.…”

“…Recently there has been some resurgence of interest [35][36][37] in molecular machines created by atomically precise manufacturing [38]. Apart from their ultimate miniaturization, molecular machines would offer the advantages of very low friction and zero wear.…”
