Stereoscopic visual evoked potentials in normal subjects and patients with open-angle glaucomas

Abstract: Visual evoked potential elicited by the onset of a random-dot stereogram can be used for objective measurement of stereoacuity in a clinical setting. Differences between controls and glaucomas in high and low disparities could indicate a stereo-specific deficit in glaucoma.

“…In our study, the visual acuity of the primary open angle glaucoma (POAG) patients was 0.41 ± 0.29 which is contrary to Korth [ 8 ] who found it to be below 0.7 and Bergua et al [ 9 ] who found it to be 0.8 or better. The cup-disc ratio of the cases was 66.0 ± 16.98 which is supported by earlier study [ 10 ].…”

“…The intraocular pressure of cases in our study was 19.55 ± 2.08 supported by Korth [ 8 ] and Parisi and Massimo [ 10 ]. All the cases were on pressure reducing treatment similar to study done by Bergua et al [ 9 ]. The foveal visual sensitivity of the subjects measured to compare the macular degeneration was found significantly less in cases.…”

“…Bergua et al [27] reported that the onset of a transient stereo VEP was delayed in patients suffering from glaucoma. The authors used very large checks (2.7 9 2.2°), and abnormal values in the patients' data were seen only with large horizontal disparities (between 14 and 40 min arc).…”

“…Since the first use of the white-black chessboard reversal pattern and the grating pattern to study vision and the revealing of tight correlations between components of the VEP and visual acuity [1,2] , researchers have attempted to apply the technique to clinical evaluation and ophthalmological assessment [3][4][5] . Because of the method-ological advantages of VEPs (simple waveform, repeatability, and small inter-individual variation), increasing attention has been paid to the study of diseases involving visual problems, such as in the field of oculopathy (amblyopia [6,7] , refractive errors, field defects, diseases of the optic nerve, glaucoma [8] and color blindness), in diseases with latent impairment of vision (multiple sclerosis [9] , diabetes [10] ), and in psychological dysfunctions (schizophrenia, dementia, epilepsy) [11][12][13][14] . So far only some changes in the early components (especially the P100) have been associated with certain diseases.…”
