Stereotactic electroencephalography in epilepsy patients for mapping of neural circuits related to emotional and psychiatric behaviors: a systematic review

Abstract: OBJECTIVE Stereotactic electroencephalography (sEEG) is an increasingly utilized method for identifying electrophysiological processes underlying sensorimotor, cognitive, and emotional behaviors. In this review, the authors outline current research using sEEG to investigate the neural activity underlying emotional and psychiatric behaviors. Understanding the current structure of intracranial research using sEEG will inform future studies of psychiatric disease and therapeutics for effective neuromodulation. … Show more

“…As for the second possibility, abnormal brain oscillations, “oscillopathies”, are commonly found in a wide variety of psychiatric diseases associated with severe cognitive deficits (see e.g. Katsuki et al, 2022 ; Shu et al, 2022 ; Sohal, 2022 ; Syed et al, 2022 ; Beste et al, 2023 ; Ramos et al, 2023 ; Wischnewski et al, 2023 for recent reviews). Rhythmic nasal airflow continues uninterrupted, but the potential alterations to the functionality of cortical RRO remain unclear.…”

“…This pioneering research had a profound impact on our understanding of brain function (Biasiucci et al., 2019; Klinčeková, 2014). Nowadays, EEG technology shows great potential in personalized medicine, brain‐controlled therapies, and diagnosis of neuropsychiatric disorders such as epilepsy and autism (Lainscsek et al., 2019; Lopez Ramos et al., 2023; Popa et al., 2020). The EEG measurement device includes subjects, stimuli (food, images, sounds, environments, etc.…”

“…FCNs are useful to study neurophysiological activity from a networks perspective, and they can be used to map networkmodeled neurophysiological activity to behavioral and cognitive dimensions. Network analysis of iEEG data pose new perspectives to uncover neural circuits underlying neurological disorders, which will be instrumental for the development of new treatment options [27].…”
