Stiffness, Pain, and Hip Muscle Strength Are Factors Associated With Self-reported Physical Disability in Hip Osteoarthritis

Abstract: Stiffness, pain, and hip muscle strength are associated with self-reported PD in hip OA. It is imperative that exercise treatments for hip OA include strategies to modify these factors. Further research should evaluate their role in preventing hip OA.

“…Compared to healthy peers, patients with hip OA have reduced hip range of motion (ROM) (Arokoski, Haara, Helminen, & Arokoski, ; Hurwitz, Hulet, Andriacchi, Rosenberg, & Galante, ) and a generalized reduction in lower limb muscle strength (Bieler, Magnusson, Christensen, Kjaer, & Beyer, ; Loureiro, Mills, & Barrett, ). Cross‐sectional studies have documented that impairments in both of these domains are associated with limitations in functional performance (Arokoski et al, ; Bieler, Magnusson, et al, ; Hurwitz et al, ; Pua, Wrigley, Collins, Cowan, & Bennell, ; Steultjens, Dekker, van Baar, Oostendorp, & Bijlsma, ) and self‐reported physical function (Steinhilber et al, ).…”

“…Osteoarthritis (OA) is a serious condition that can lead to mobility impairment, functional limitations and disabilities in older adults 1, 2, 3, and affects 33% (12.4 million) of all adults over the age of 65. 1 Approximately 80% of adults who have OA experience some level of mobility impairment, and 25% have disabilities.…”

“…1 This disease is characterized by joint pain, reduced range of motion, and muscular weakness. 2 Patients with hip OA also demonstrate abnormal movement patterns. Biomechanical changes in the sagittal plane are characterized by reduced joint excursions and moments 3 , while proximal changes in the frontal plane include increased trunk lean toward the affected limb and contralateral pelvic drop, in which the contralateral iliac crest moves inferiorly during stance on the affected limb.…”
