Stiffness parameters, intima-media thickness and early atherosclerosis in systemic lupus erythematosus patients

Abstract: Detection of early carotid vascular disease in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is considered mandatory for evaluation of subclinical atherosclerosis (ATS), and various ultrasonographic (US) parameters have been proposed. In the present investigation, 33 SLE and 33 healthy age-matched females have been studied by colour-coded sonography of the common carotid artery, assessing intima-media thickness (IMT), vascular strain (VS), vascular distensibility (VD), vascular stiffness (VSf) and pressure-… Show more

“…This mirrors findings in two other large US SLE cohort studies in which cross-sectional IMT2 and IMT progression45 did not differ between SLE and controls. In contrast, several smaller European and US studies do demonstrate higher IMT in SLE 42 4648. Again, this discrepancy in our cohort might be due to the exclusion of statins.…”

“…Furthermore, our results was in accordance with the study of Cacciapaglia et al 24 where IMT in patients with SLE significantly correlated with disease duration, and SLEDAI. However, our results differed from theirs since, in our study, there was no statistically significant relation between disease duration and carotid IMT.…”

“…For several years, assessment ofatherosclerosis in connective tissue diseases has been gaining interest in rheumatology research, due to the growing evidence of a link between chronic inflammatory rheumatic diseases and atherosclerosis (1)(2)(3)(4)(5)(6)(7)(8).…”
