Stipetum novakii ass. nova – a new association of serpentine rocky grassland vegetation (Halacsyetalia sendtneri) in Serbia

Abstract: -Phytosociological characteristics of grassland communities above serpentines (order Halacsyetalia sendtneri H. Ritter-Studni~ka 1970) in Serbia, are analyzed according to Braun-Blanquet methodology. In order to detect the basic floristic differentiation of analyzed communities ordinary correspondence analysis was applied. Cluster analysis was also performed to see the structure and separation of the communities based on the floristic composition. In order to determine diagnostic species, fidelity indices with… Show more

“…Its representatives grow in open grasslands, alpine meadows (in neutral to alkaline soils), lowlands, mountains, and stony and sandy deserts, as well as on steppes, rocks, and screes. Sometimes particular Stipa species create communities, commonly known as feather grass steppes or feather grass grasslands, in which they constitute diagnostic, constant, and/or dominant species (e. Korovin, 1962;Stanyukovich, 1982, Lavrenko et al, 1991Gadghiev et al, 2002;Agakhanjanz & Breckle, 2003;Eberhardt, 2004;Peer et al, 2008;Chytrý, 2010;Ermakov, 2012;Rachkovskaya & Bragina, 2012;Kabaš et al, 2013;Nowak et al, 2016Nowak et al, , 2018.…”

“…Namely, amongst the stands of five different Stipa-dominated dry grassland types we have distinguished four new syntaxa on the association level, while the relevés dominated by S. novaki were assigned to previously described association Stipetum novakii Kabaš et D. Lakušić 2013(Kabaš et al 2013. Moreover, the results of the classification and ordination analyses have justified five distinctive groups of relevés.…”

“…The same is valid for the Stipa representatives on the territory of the Central Balkans, particularly in Serbia and Kosovo (for details see Kabaš 2016), where Stipa species are also very abundant on dry grasslands on ultramafics (Kabaš et al 2013;Kabaš 2016). The ultramafic sites investigated in this study, are by their nature very extreme habitats.…”

“…Open serpentine habitats are characterized by pronounced thermophilous character and xeric conditions. The xerothermic character of serpentine plants is also enhanced by the specific chemical composition of the serpentine substrate (Kabaš et al, 2013). The study fields were mowed once in the time of inflorescences formation of the dominant grass -Agrostis capillaris (late June -early July).…”
