Imaging polarimetry has emerged over the past three decades as a powerful tool to enhance the information available in a variety of remote sensing applications. We discuss the foundations of passive imaging polarimetry, the phenomenological reasons for designing a polarimetric sensor, and the primary architectures that have been exploited for developing imaging polarimeters. Considerations on imaging polarimeters such as calibration, optimization, and error performance are also discussed. We review many important sources and examples from the scientific literature.

Star Test Polarimetry is a method of inferring polarization information in a single irradiance measurement from the shape of a point spread function [1]. We present the optical design of an image sampling polarimeter that utilizes a stress engineered optical element to image the polarization states of scattered light collected by a lens across a given field. In our scheme, an intermediate image is sampled by a pinhole array and a relay system projects the polarization dependent point spread functions to a CCD. In this way, we show polarization mapping of a sample using a single irradiance image.

Image sensors used in consumer cameras only detect intensity of light. Spectral, angular, and phase information of incident light is largely lost. For conventional applications like photography, the intensity information with three color bands (RGB) is sufficient. However, for advanced sensing applications, such as autonomous vehicles, biomedical imaging, and robotics, extracting more information from the incident light could help machines to make better decisions. It is expected that, in the future, more cameras will be built for machines than for people, which will be further accelerated by the rapid progress in machine learning and artificial intelligence. We envision that these applications will substantially benefit from multimodal measurement of light fields by advanced imaging sensors. In this Perspective, we discuss recent progress in image sensors with multimodal capabilities.
