Stonehenge Has Got a Younger Sister Ales Stones in Sweden Decoded

Abstract: We report a novel finding that Stonehenge in England and Ales Stones in Sweden were built with the same basic geometry and using the megalithic yard as standard of measure. This opens quite new perspectives into cultural influence, travel and trading in the Bronze Age.

“…Obviously, this point in the Solar year was not as important in southern Scandinavia, as it seems to have been in the British Islands judging from the structure and geometric setting of monuments like Stonehenge (Mörner and Lind, 2012). In southern Scandinavia the main event to celebrate was the sunrise at Winter solstice as demonstrated for Heimdalls Stones (Mörner et al, 2009), Ales Stones (Lind and Mörner, 2010) and by the majority of carvings on the rock surface at Järrestad (this paper).…”

“…The orientation of the big stone-ship of Ales Stones is in SEeNW (Lind and Mörner, 2010;Mörner and Lind, 2012) like the mini-ship at Järrestad. Ohlmarks (1983) even proposed that the mini-ship at Järrestad was a blueprint of the Ales Stones.…”

“…The Ales Stones are an impressive monument of 60 stones (today 59 left) in the form of a 69 m long stone-ship, precisely oriented with respect to the annual and daily movements of the Sun through the sky (Figure 1, site 7) (Lind, 2005;Mörner, 2015;Mörner & Lind, 2012). This monument is an astronomical calendar and records 11 months of 30 days and a 12 th month (July) of 35 days, giving a full year of 365 days.…”

“…direction (Figure 2), Ales Stones has a basic geometry consisting of a rectangle, a circle and the line of the first sunbeams at summer solstice. When the Stonehenge picture is superposed on that of Ales Stones, the two basic geometric elements co-inside in details (Mörner & Lind, 2012). This cannot be a mere coincidence but must imply an active cultural exchange (i.e.…”
