Since the discovery of the promising properties of graphene, research in the field has attracted numerous grants and sponsors, leading to an exponential rise in the number of papers and applications. This article presents a global map of graphene research and its intellectual structure, drawn using the terms of more than 50,000 documents extracted from Scopus database, years 1998-2015. The unit of analysis consisted of descriptors (including Author Keywords and Indexed Keywords), with the co-occurrence of descriptor as the unit of measure, using fractional counting. The main research lines identified are: Fundamental Research, Functionalization and Biomedical Applications, Technology and Devices, Materials Science, Energy Storage, Optics and Chemical Properties and Sensors. Using overlay maps, we depict the graphene research efforts of the United States, the European Union (Europe-28), and China, and project their evolution through longitudinal maps to facilitate comparison. The United States was initially at the head of world output in graphene research, but was surpassed by China in 2011 and by Europe in 2014, as a result of their respective scientific policies and financial support. The output of China has since been so intense that it can be said to mark graphene research trends. We believe this information may be valuable for the core community involved in this scientific field, as it offers a large-scale analysis showing how research has changed over time. It is therefore also helpful for policy makers and research planners. The resulting maps are a useful and attractive tool for the graphene research community, as they reveal the main lines of exploration at a glance. The methodology described here could be re-created in any other field of science to uncover and display its intellectual structure and evolution over time.

Keeping abreast of most technologically important patents is also a challenging task for patent granting organizations and patenting inventors and firms. As a consequence, patent offices have invested in developing novel automated approaches for identifying landmark patents in technology areas. Patent Citation Spectroscopy (PCS) provides a web-application to answer this question within minutes.Patents branch out in tree-like structures along trajectories. The historical root, or seminal, patent can be followed using sequences of patent citations. The algorithmic method of PCS presented in this study provides a solution to the problem where to begin the analysis of a technological development. PCS enables the user to retrieve the fundamental patent in any technological domain using a topical search. This application thus orients the user strategically.The online data-mining method of PCS is based on Reference Publication Year Spectroscopy (RPYS) technique, a methodology developed for use on academic literature. However, PCS includes additional normalization calculations to disentangle citation outliers based on the outstanding performance of a single document as compared to a group of documents.To illustrate the value of PCS, we provide the results of a search for the seminal patents of the nine CPC subclasses pertaining to photovoltaic solar cells, a key area of technological innovation. Research and development (R&D) in photovoltaic devices continues to yield greater efficiencies, offering the potential to lower the cost of solar energy (Chu et al, 2016). As these advances in solar technology become primed for penetrating the global energy system, an understanding of the key patents and inventors in photovoltaic materials will assist decisionmakers in understanding the R&D landscape (Polman et al, 2016). We demonstrate that such searches are easily completed via PCS in each of the nine CPC subclasses. Searches of scholarly article databases validated the results obtained through PCS in five of the nine classes.

Development and application of the Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) method, have been the subject of numerous reviews. In this paper, we consider the papers that apply DEA methods specifically to financial services, or which use financial services data to experiment with a newly introduced DEA model. We examine 620 papers published in journals indexed in the Web of Science database, from 1985 to April 2016. We analyse the sample applying citations network analysis. This paper investigates the DEA method and its applications in financial services. We analyse the diffusion of DEA in three sub-samples: (1) banking groups, (2) money market funds, and (3) insurance groups by identifying the main paths, that is, the main flows of the ideas underlying each area of research. This allows us to highlight the main approaches, models and efficiency types used in each research areas. No unique methodological preference emerges within these areas.Innovations in the DEA methodologies (network models, slacks based models, directional distance models and Nash bargaining game) clearly dominate recent research.For each subsample, we describe the geographical distribution of these studies, and provide some basic statistics related to the most active journals and scholars.
