Strategies for enhanced deammonification performance and reduced nitrous oxide emissions

Abstract: Deammonification's performance and associated nitrous oxide emissions (NO) depend on operational conditions. While studies have investigated factors for high performances and low emissions separately, this study investigated optimizing deammonification performance while simultaneously reducing NO emissions. Using a design of experiment (DoE) method, two models were developed for the prediction of the nitrogen removal rate and NO emissions during single-stage deammonification considering three operational facto… Show more

“…Gegenüber dem permanenten Anstieg der N 2 O‐Konzentrationen während der anoxischen Mischzeit bei der Nitritation zeigten bereits vorangegangene Untersuchungen eine komplette N 2 O‐Reduktion nach nur 18 min bei einer Hochlast‐Deammonifikation nach 30 Wochen Betrieb.…”

“…Response surface method has been applied to the optimization of water and wastewater treatment processes [7][8][9][10]. RSM method has been also utilized to optimize the selected parameters of partial nitritation and/or anammox processes [11][12][13][14][15]. All of those studies were fully empirical and/or included not more than three independent variables.…”

On-site power production can be increased by: i) optimising existing anaerobic digestion processes [245], ii) employing anaerobic co-digestion [246]; iii) upgrading combined heat and power units (CHPUs); or iv) installing other on-site renewable energy technologies such as solar panels and wind turbines [120,237].…”
