Stray light characterization with ultrafast time-of-flight imaging

Abstract: Understanding stray light (SL) is a crucial aspect in the development of high-end optical instruments, for instance space telescopes. As it drives image quality, SL must be controlled by design and characterized experimentally. However, conventional SL characterization methods are limited as they do not provide information on its origins. The problem is complex due to the diversity of light interaction processes with surfaces, creating various SL contributors. Therefore, when SL level is higher than expected, … Show more

“…This would solve the three fundamental issues of conventional approaches, it would make the interpretation easier, would allow to identify the origin of potential problems, and it would discriminate the stray light from the measurement device. This is exactly what we have done recently and demonstrated with a refractive optical system [8], with a streak camera setup. This will be described in the next section.…”

“…This will however require to be able to adapt theoretical SL models to the reality of experiments, which is a complex task when many ghosts are present. Ultrafast SL characterization is an interesting prospect for that matter as it can be used for reverse engineering the SL properties of an instrument [30,31].…”

“…Interference testing cannot be performed when the crosstalk fringes are significant. Many studies on incoherent stray lights in optical systems and related simulation software have been conducted [6][7][8][9]; however, no simulation software is available for the interference compensation testing of coherent stray lights [10]. There is little research in this field, and existing studies have been unable to obtain specific information on the size and intensity of crosstalk fringes.…”
