Straylight before and after phacoemulsification in eyes with preoperative corrected distance visual acuity better than 0.1 logMAR

Abstract: In eyes with relatively good CDVA of 0.1 logMAR or better (decimal 0.8 or better; Snellen 20/25 or better), straylight improved by 0.10 log(s) after cataract surgery. A subgroup of 44 eyes had an improvement of more than 0.20 log(s), which is comparable to a 2-line improvement on the vision chart.

“…The raw data supplied by the original authors or the plots analysis was used to determine the 95% confidence interval (CI). 4,11,[21][22][23][24][25][26]28,30,31 To study the consistency of the new pseudophakic reference curve, it was compared to each of the 16 collected articles. The cross-validation technique was applied to avoid the influence of a particular result.…”

“…For this purpose, raw data were received from the authors of 3 different papers. 21,22,25 Analysis of the complete datasets from these studies led to the development of a computational model of straylight improvement after crystalline lens replacement. Improvement was defined as preoperative log(s) minus postoperative log(s), after which the relationship between preoperative straylight and its improvement was studied.…”

“…Since normal values for the young eye are around log(s) = 0.9, this corresponds to log(s) = 1.5. If this is compared to a value of log(s) = 1.4 for early cataract surgery (Lapid-Gortzak et al, 2014;van den Berg et al, 2013;van der Meulen et al, 2012), it follows that patients are already eligible for cataract surgery before the limit for safe driving is reached. This should be recognized.…”

“…12 Straylight improves significantly in many patients after phacoemulsification in eyes with good preoperative visual acuity. 13 However, the contribution of the IOL type to postoperative straylight has not yet been elucidated.…”
