“…While our study focused on quantifying four P fractions (Figure ), future studies could more finely characterize P fractions and their mobility/lability under variable biogeochemical and redox conditions. In particulate, there appear to be important but understudied P forms in aquatic ecosystems, such as nanoparticle phosphorus (i.e., River & Richardson, ). The prevalence of these P forms in urban environments has yet to be assessed and may help understand patterns described here.…”

“…Our 1‐kDa ultrafiltration experiments on grab samples from February 2017 support this assumption, with concentrations ranging from 2 to 10 μg L −1 Fe, while 0.45‐μm filters on the same grab samples resulted in Fe values between 50 and 100 μg L −1 . A previous study conducted in North Carolina also showed 1‐kDa Fe values less than 10 μg L −1 throughout the course of a year, over an order of magnitude lower than Fe concentrations in 0.45‐μm filtrate (River and Richardson, 2018b). …”

“…Clays are known to bind P due to sorption onto aluminum and iron oxides and are also known to exist in sizes less than 0.45 μm in watersheds across the world (Gibbs, 1977). Discrete P‐containing oxyhydroxide nanoparticles have also been shown to play a large role in P transport in some watersheds (Baken et al, 2016; River and Richardson, 2018b). Therefore, it is not surprising that nanoparticles such as those seen in Fig.…”

“…We also relied on results from the Web of Science metaanalysis and research article synthesis when summarizing knowledge gaps related to microbial P forms and cycling mechanisms in agricultural water quality management research. We will not synthesize research on abiotic and biotic Fe and P interactions because these subjects have been thoroughly reviewed elsewhere (Chacon et al, 2006;Gerke, 2010;Lin et al, 2018;Martins et al, 2011;River & Richardson, 2018;Safarzadeh-Amiri et al, 2017;Saia et al, 2017;Wan et al, 2019;Wilfert et al, 2015;Wu et al, 2019) All data and analysis scripts associated with this publication are available on GitHub at <will fill in upon publication> and Zenodo (DOI: <will fill in upon publication>).…”
