StreetSmart Traffic: Discovering and Disseminating Automobile Congestion Using VANET's

Abstract: Automobile traffic is a major problem in developed societies. We collectively waste huge amounts of time and resources traveling through traffic congestion. Drivers choose the route that they believe will be the fastest; however traffic congestion can significantly change the duration of a trip. Significant savings of fuel and time could be achieved if traffic congestion patterns could be effectively discovered and disseminated to drivers. We propose a system that uses a standard GPS driving aid, augmented wit… Show more

“…For instance, a vehicle taking an exit out from the indoor parking building will not have a full power signal but needs to make a critical turn decision. More importantly, as addressed in [2,11], the cost of adopting any centralized solution such as 3G/4G networks is high, and may not be possible when such an infrastructure does not exist or is damaged.…”

“…Other existing control schemes use roadside units (RSUs) to collect (e.g., [12]) or disseminate (e.g., [2]) the congestion information. However, to install RSUs at each intersection in the entire city, and to keep them working on a 24/7 schedule, is not easy.…”

“…Examples of this include TrafficView: a device which gives drivers an extended horizon i.e. a real time view of road traffic far beyond what they can actually see [13], StreetSmart: a system which identifies and disseminates traffic patterns to users [14] and SOTIS: a system which distributes up-to-date travel and traffic information pertinent to a vehicles locale [15].…”

“…However, when the vehicle passes through an environment that creates a multipath effect, these techniques fail to produce the high localization accuracy that they attain in open environments. Unfortunately, vehicles often travel in environments that cause a multipath effect, such as areas with high buildings, trees, or tunnels [4]. The goal of this research is to minimize the multipath effect with respect to the localization accuracy of vehicles in VANET.…”
