Streptomyces acidiscabies sp. nov.

Abstract: A new bacterial species is described, for which we propose the name Streptomyces acidiscabies. This organism causes a scab disease of potatoes (Solanurn tuberosurn) which may occur in soils with pH values below 5.2. The acid scab symptoms caused by this organism are indistinguishable from the symptoms of commn scab caused by Streptomyces scabies. In culture, S . acidiscabies is distinct from S. scabies, having flexuous spore chains, a growth medium-dependent spore mass color ranging from white to organish red,… Show more

“…S. stelliscabiei has been reported from France and the USA (Bouchek-Mechiche et al 2000;Wanner 2006). Phylogenetically more distant CS-causing species are known from multiple regions, including S. turgidiscabies in Japan and Finland (Kreuze et al 1999;Miyajima et al 1998), and S. acidiscabies from Maine, Korea and Japan (Lambert and Loria 1989a;Song et al 2004;Tóth et al 2001). Unique species have been described from Korea (Park et al 2003a, b).…”

“…Streptomyces scabiei ) was first described in 1891 and has a global distribution (Lambert and Loria, 1989a). During the last 75 years, two additional species, Streptomyces acidiscabies (Lambert and Loria, 1989b) and Streptomyces turgidiscabies (Miyajima et al ., 1998), have independently emerged as pathogens in the USA and Japan respectively. The emergence of new phytopathogenic species has led us to postulate that the genetic determinants for plant pathogenesis are being shared between Streptomyces species that are adapted to specific ecological niches.…”
