Striped cucumber Beetle and Western Striped Cucumber Beetle (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae)

Abstract: The striped cucumber beetle [StCB; Acalymma vittatum (F.) (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae)] and the western striped cucumber beetle [WStCB; Acalymma trivittatum (Mannerheim)] are closely related species of herbivores endemic to North America that specialize on Cucurbitaceae plants. StCB and WStCB are key pests of cucurbit crops that can reduce quantity and quality of yield or even kill plants, especially seedlings, by feeding and by vectoring pathogens. Insecticides can be used to control StCB and WStCB, but a numb… Show more

“…Females that had experience of cucumber, squash and melon plants were significantly attracted to the same plant, and the larvae were attracted only to volatiles of uninfested cucumber, squash and melon ( Jalali et al, 2019 ). Striped cucumber beetle (StCB) and the western striped cucumber beetle (WStCB) are native to North America and StCB is reported to have attained the status of primary pest in northeastern and midwestern United States and eastern Canada ( Haber et al, 2021 ).…”

“…In addition, we counted the number of herbivores on the plant and within 10 cm around each plant. Every plot was sampled weekly for four weeks from June 27th to July 15 th , when all the plots started to flower, and the striped cucumber beetle population decreased and moved to the flowers for mating aggregation [26]. On June 16 th , we also recorded the number of dead plants per plot with leaves or stems wilted as a measure of bacterial wilt incidence [30].…”

“…The striped cucumber beetle, Acalymma vittatum (F.) (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae), is the major insect pest of squash crops in the northeastern and midwestern United States and eastern Canada [26]. Adult beetles feed on cotyledons, foliage, flowers, and fruits, and larvae feed exclusively on roots [27,28].…”

“…In North America, the striped cucumber beetle (SCB) Acalymma vittatum (F.) (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) is a main pest in cucurbit fields since the beginning of the 20th century [ 1 , 2 ]. Striped cucumber beetles have one generation per year in Canada, but their voltinism can vary according to geographical regions, reaching up to three generations per year in southern parts of the United States [ 3 ].…”
