Stroke in the Very Old: A Systematic Review of Studies on Incidence, Outcome, and Resource Use

Abstract: Background and Purpose. Stroke incidence increases with age and is likely to increase in the aging populations. We investigated incidence, outcome, and resource use in very old subjects with stroke. Methods. We performed a systematic review of available data through electronic search of the literature databases and manual search of reference lists. Data were extracted for the age groups of over 80, 80 to 84 years old, and over 85. Overall incidence rates, expressed as the number of first strokes per 1000 perso… Show more

“…This is in congruence with previous findings that age remains a non-modifiable and most important singular risk factor for stroke. This risk increases with each successive decade above age 55 years 30,31 . Our findings suggest that the incidence of stroke is slightly higher in males than females based on the proportion of male patients admitted on account of stroke compared to females which is consistent with findings from previous studies 32,33,34 .…”

“…About 30% of all strokes occur in patients over the age of 80 years, with 17% occurring in patients over 85 years [1]. It is anticipated that the incidence of stroke will more than double by 2050, with the largest proportion of these incident cases occurring among patients 75 years and older and minorities [2].…”
