Strong competition between velocity-changing and phase- or state-changing collisions inH2spectra perturbed by Ar

Abstract: A collisional inhomogeneous broadening of the H2 Q(1) line perturbed by Ar was observed for the first time 25 years ago. Several attempts were made to explain the line broadening from ab initio calculations, which however resulted in fundamental discrepancies between the theory and experiment. To resolve this problem we investigate two possible sources of these differences. First, we repeat the ab initio calculations of the broadening and shifting speed dependence, using in the scattering calculations a new, h… Show more

“…This is due to the presence of very strong Dicke‐narrowing effect and a strong speed dependence of the collisional broadenings and shifts. Furthermore, these two effects influence each other leading to further complications . In this section, we demonstrate that in the particular case of the considered here purely rotational lines of D 2 all the line‐shape effects effectively lead the profile to collapse into a simple Lorentz shape.…”

“…We demonstrate that it leads to nonlinear behavior of the frequency at maximum absorption as a function of pressure. This behavior is determined not by the line shift speed dependence only, but also by more refined effects originating from the competition between the shift speed dependence and the velocitychanging collisions [19,39,40]. For the Doppler-limited measurements, aiming at the line position determination accuracy at the level of 10 −4 cm −1 and lower, the collisions which are improperly taken into account can be the main source of systematic errors.…”

“…3.2.4a). Note that the large discrepancy between quantum computations of the line widths and those measured for H 2 perturbed by Ar obtained in [154] was solved [155] by using the SDBB profile which properly handled velocity-and speed-changing collisions (cf Fig. 6).…”
