Stronger connectivity and higher extraversion protect against stress-related deterioration of cognitive functions

Abstract: Here we attempted to define the relationship between: EEG activity, personality and coping during lockdown. We were in a unique situation since the COVID-19 outbreak interrupted our independent longitudinal study. We already collected a significant amount of data before lockdown. During lockdown, a subgroup of participants willingly continued their engagement in the study. These circumstances provided us with an opportunity to examine the relationship between personality/cognition and brain rhythms in individu… Show more

“…But extraversion is also characterized by assertiveness, social activity, and a tendency for being talkative, which should be a part of a coping resource. Rogala et al ( 2021 ) found that extraversion may act as a defense mechanism against perceived stress during exposure to a stress situation such as the COVID-19 pandemic.…”

“…More specifically, all three components of positive mental health (i.e., emotional, psychological, and social well-being) were found to be positively correlated with extraversion and negatively correlated with neuroticism, even while controlling for demographics (Shokrkon & Nicoladis, 2021). Furthermore, participants who were tested during the pandemic exhibited higher brain activity levels as measured by EEG and reported higher neuroticism levels than those tested pre-pandemic (Rogala et al, 2021).…”
