Structural and corrosion protection analyses of coatings containing silicone‐polyester resins

Abstract: PurposeSilicone and polyester resins have been prepared at various compositions with the purpose of determining the best performing binder system. The coating materials that have been developed have been analysed and evaluated for their protection ability.Design/methodology/approachSilicone and polyester resins have been prepared at various compositions to identify best performing binder system. To evaluate the properties, different analytical methods have been employed. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy… Show more

“…The combination of binders and pigments produced environmental paint which added with stabilisers (additives) for better durability. Acrylic has been known for its high weathering and embrittlement resistance, good mechanical and electrochemical properties and gloss retention (Stoye and Freitag, 1998;Ramesh et al, 2008). These properties could be improved by using silicone resin for unique chemistry to control liquid/liquid, liquid/solid or liquid/air interfaces (Abidin et al, 2006).…”

“…This may be also due to higher amount of polymer networks which actually helped the anticorrosion enhancement compared to the systems with PANI, as the amount of polymer has reduced when PANI is added to the system. In a hybrid silicone-acrylic polymer coating system, there will be crosslinking network formation between the silicone resin and the polyol resins (Ramesh et al, 2008). This crosslinking density would have reduced in the addition of PANI by reducing the resin components which caused the reduction coating resistance.…”

“…Recent developments are more focusing on the hybrid composite system using different organic resins that can improve the compatibility, corrosion resistance and mechanical properties (Anand Prabu and Alagar, 2004;Raps et al, 2009;Bautista et al, 2011;Rau et al, 2011aRau et al, , 2011bRamesh et al, 2013). Our previous reports discussed on the formulation using hybrid polymer resin using polyester, and the results showed that it has good physical properties such as good adhesion, scratch resistance and flexibility (Ramesh et al, 2006;2013).…”
