Structural and Morphological Characterization of Cerium Oxide Nanocrystals Prepared by Hydrothermal Synthesis

Abstract: Colloidal cerium oxide (CeO2) nanocrystals prepared by hydrothermal synthesis were characterized by high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) and three-dimensional electron tomography (3D-ET). HRTEM images of individual CeO2 nanocrystals were then simulated by Blochwave and multislice simulations to determine the atomic arrangement and terminating atoms. The edge length distributions were between 5.0 and 8.0 nm with an average edge length of 6.7 nm. The HRTEM images showed that the CeO2 particle… Show more

“…The exposed lattice facets (200) are highly active facets, which offer the largest possible amount of active sites for increasing CO catalytic reactions. [40] Besides, it is worth noting here that the grain boundary was clearly observed, which indicates that the doped CeO 2 particle consisted of numerous nanocrystallines. Polycrystallinity of the products is illustrated by the selected area electron diffraction (SAED) pattern ( Figure 5, b).…”

“…For the purpose of increasing catalytic activities, it is necessary to fabricate ceria nanoparticles with a large surface. [40] To address the potential application of the prepared Mndoped CeO 2 nanoparticles in catalysis, we chose CO oxidation as a modal catalytic reaction. For comparison, pure ceria synthesized through the same route was selected.…”

“…A relatively large range of colloidal nanomaterial platforms have been successfully fabricated. [1][2][3][4][5] Independently of the specific synthesis approach, the physical and chemical properties of nanostructured materials are indeed distinctly different from those of bulk matter with the same chemical composition. This difference is related to the reduced size, which leads to quantum confinement and/or to structural phase changes.…”
