“…DS increases with reaction temperature from 85 to 100 • C, molar ratio of phthalic anhydride/AGU in cellulose from 2:1 to 10:1, and reaction time from 20 to 120 min. Cellulose succinates are produced by succinoylation of cellulose using succinic anhydride and [Bmim]Cl (DS up to 2.18) [184], and with addition of catalysts: N-bromosuccinimide (DS up to 2.31) [185], 4-dimethylaminopyridine (DS up to 2.34) [186], and iodide (DS up to 1.54) [187].…”

“…2 illustrates FT-IR spectra of native cellulose (spectrum 1) and regenerated cellulose sample 17 (spectrum 2, pretreated with 600 W microwave irradiation for 20 min at 25 o C). In these two spectra, the absorbances at 3416,2916,1638,1417,1323,1161,1046, and 895 cm -1 are associated with native cellulose (Oh et al, 2005;Liu et al, 2006). Bands in the two spectra were rather similar and no new band was displayed in spectrum of regenerated cellulose, indicating that the structure of both samples are similar and [C4mim]Cl is direct solvent for cellulose.…”

“…This finding was similar to the pioneering work by Richard et al (2002), who found that ILs containing the chloride anion [Cl] − have successfully dissolved fibrous cellulose (Aldrich) and Whatman cellulose filter papers. The [Cl] − anion has also been used as reaction medium in the chemical modification of cellulose, such that carboxyl groups are grafted onto the cellulose (Liu et al 2006). The dissolution of cellulose by ILs is believed to be caused by the disruption of inter-and intramolecular hydrogen bonds in cellulose chains, followed by the formation of new hydrogen bonds between cellulose hydroxyl protons and anions of the ILs (Remsing et al 2006).…”
