Structural characterization of a variety of spider silks from Turkey using different biophysical techniques

Abstract: Abstract. Various experimental methods (XRD, FTIR, SAXS, DLS and SEM) were used to investigate structures of the silk samples weaved by spiders in Turkey. Silk samples were collected from the natural habitats belonging to the spider species (i.e., Near Salt Lake/Şereflikoçhisar,İvriz Dam/Eregli-Konya, Karataş Lake/Burdur and several locations in Black Sea Region of Turkey). Among all collected species, Araneidae (Araneus angulatus, Argiope bruennichi, Argiope lobata, Larinoides cornutus), Eresidae (Eresus cinn… Show more

“…Additionally, the tensile strength of spider silk exhibited 81.57 MPa in breaking stress and 9.18% strain at break. This finding demonstrates nearly identical data obtained from previous studies [26,27,[62][63][64][65]. From the results, it was validated that natural spider silk exhibits superior mechanical properties comparable to steel [66,67].…”

“…There are few reports on the animal-mediated synthesis of MNPs. The most studied case is the silk fibroin, synthesized by arachnids and worms, such as Bombyx mori, which have a little catalytic and molecular recognition, so that they can be used as suture material [40,139,[169][170][171][172].…”

“…While glycine-rich nanoformations give silk its elasticity, alanine-rich nanoformations provide its strength. [51] This prediction was experienced during surgical applications since A. vera-coated A. bruennichi filaments are less flexible and harder (brittle) than A. bruennichi filaments. Therefore, this situation was also tested with mechanical tests.…”
