This work describes morphologic variations in the organs and structures of the male reproductive system in haunus ornatus, analyzed independently from the alterations that promote structural variations. Seven adult samples were used, they were collected in Botucatu (São Paulo State, Brazil) during reproductive activity period. The specimens were dissected and rostrum-cloacal length measures were taken. Descriptive and biometrics anatomical analyses were also obtained. Three of these animals were sent to histological routine for the analysis of the testicular architecture, where it was schematized in vegetable paper with pen Indian ink. Statistical analyses (mean, standart deviation, Shapiro-Wilk test, Student's t and Simple Lineal Regression) were used for interpretation of the results. The testes of . ornatus are cylindrical with white coloration and they possess a rudimentary ovarian structure, the Bidder's organ, in the testicular cranial extremity. The male reproductive system of . ornatus presents conspicuous anatomical variations intra and interindividuals, especially to the form and size of the testes and of the Bidder's organ, which did not present relationship with the size of individual. As for the location, the testes are disposed ventral to the kidneys, but they are in different levels, accompanying differences attributed to the kidneys levels. The disposition and number of extensions in the abdominal fatty bodies is variable among the pair's members, and consequently among individuals. Histologically differences regarding the germ epithelium arrangement were not observed. The germ epithelium is arranged in seminiferous locule, therefore these characteristics seem to follow the pattern of the description for the other anurans. The morphologic heterogeneity for anatomical variations in that species were few significant. Thus, other studies are still necessary for the establishment of morphologic relations and its phylogenetic implications, as well as to understand how the evolutionary pressures act modeling this anuran structures anatomy. Keywords: amphibia testis Bidder's organ fatty bodies. Anurans have a high reproductive diversity, which is closely associated with testicular dynamics and sperm production. This variety in reproduction is modulated by the sexual characteristics of reproductive strategies, such as polyandry. Leptodactylus podicipinus has high reproductive plasticity, wide geographical distribution, and polyandric behavior. Although aspects of the testes and sperm of this species are known, knowledge about the relationship between these aspects and reproductive investment is scarce. The present study evaluated the morphological characteristics of the testes and sperm in an urban environment. We used 11 sexually mature males from the city of Campo Grande, Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil. The specimens were obtained from night excursions between April and September, the months that constitute the postrainy season. The biometric data (snout-vent length, testes, and body mass) were associated with sperm parameters (length of the spermatozoon head and tail). Stereological analyses of sperm morphology and the testes were performed. The results showed correlations between testis mass and spermatozoon length, which were positively related to head length and negatively related to tail length. The locular area and tail length were also negatively correlated. The percentage of normal spermatozoa was 97%; however, some sperm heads and tails exhibited different morphologies from the pattern described for the species. The germinative structure comprised more than 50% of the locular area composed of spermatozoa. The results of this study contribute to the knowledge of aspects related to the reproductive biology of L. podicipinus obtained from an urban environment.
Complexity and reproductive plasticity are very well‐known characteristics of anurans. The group is being continuously explored taxonomically and phylogenetically, which leads to a great potential diversity not yet uncovered. This is particularly evident due to the lack of investigation regarding species‐specific traits, even the ones well distributed in the lineages as polyandry. Although the climate and environment affect reproductive variability, each species has unique dynamics, and a deeper understanding of their reproductive cycles is essential for meaningful comparisons and recognition of patterns within the extensive variability observed in anurans. Given this context, the present study examined the reproductive and environmental parameters of the polyandrous species Leptodactylus podicipinus throughout its reproductive cycle over two consecutive years. The objective was to characterize the species' reproductive dynamics and compare them with phylogenetically related species and other polyandrous species, aiming to explore patterns and the influence of polyandry on anuran reproduction. The main reproductive activity of L. podicipinus was during the months with greater rainfall, from October to February. The seminiferous epithelium presented a higher mean of final germinative cells (spermatozoa) in the reproductive period (October–February) and early germinative cells (spermatocytes I and spermatids) in the non‐reproductive period (March–September). Among the climatic parameters tested, rainfall was the only one significantly related to reproductive outcomes. Two distinct germinative patterns were identified between polyandric and non‐polyandric species compared. Polyandry is certainly a trait that plays a significant role in shaping gametogenesis and the evolution of animals with this reproductive attribute.
