Structural characterization, reproductive phenology and anthropogenic disturbance of mangroves in Costa do Sol, Bons Sinais Estuary and Pemba-Metuge from Mozambique

Abstract: Mangrove forests are among the most important ecosystems with high ecological and economic value. In order to better understand and conserve this ecosystem, we aim to provide an overview of mangrove structure along the southern, central and northern parts of Mozambique, in Costa do Sol (CS), Bons Sinais Estuary (BSE) and Pemba-Metuge (PM), respectively. A total of 10 plots/site (10 × 10 m) along a transect perpendicular to the seashore were used. Inside the plots, the stem diameter and height were measured, an… Show more

“…Four sampling localities were chosen for this study due to differences in the geomorphology and the dynamics of the local conditions where the mangrove forests are located. Costa do Sol and Pemba-Metuge mangroves are in general more influenced by bay characteristics, Bons Sinais Estuary mangrove is more an estuarine mangrove and Inhaca Island is a mangrove situated on an island where it is also influenced by the nearby bay with some swamp water (Barbosa et al, 2001;Bandeira et al, 2009;Amade et al, 2019). In addition, the zonation of the different mangrove forests considered here is distinct among the sampling localities.…”

“…Anthropogenic disturbance of these mangroves also varies among the sampling localities. Costa do Sol is more affected by urban growth while at Pemba-Metuge, Bons Sinais Estuary and Inhaca Island the mangroves are more exposed to intensive selective harvesting (Amade et al, 2019). Pemba-Metuge is located at Cabo Delgado province on the North coast of Mozambique (Fig.…”

“…The main livelihoods associated with the estuary are fishing and agriculture, collection and sale of firewood (from mangroves), small businesses trading fish and fish products and agriculture products (Blythe et al, 2014;Unaite, 2017). Furthermore, the estuary provides nutrients that nourish adjacent coastal marine ecosystems and nurseries (Hoguane and Armando, 2015) and the dense mangrove forests are an important carbon sink and mitigation against climate change (Amade et al, 2019). Remote sensing and GIS techniques are often applied to detect change in LU and LC by season or over longer time frames (Mallupattu and Reddy, 2013;Berlanga-Robles and Ruiz-Luna, 2002;Hudak and Wessman, 1998;Ngondo et al, 2021).…”
